Bug Description

Ubuntu is missing vim-lesstif.

It is present in Debian: http://packages.debian.org/lenny/vim-lesstif

Unfortunately, vim-gtk/vim-gnome works well only if used locally or remotely from similar Linux installation. But when working remotely, both of the front-ends look pretty ugly and are barely usable with foreign X11 servers.

Since lesstif library integrates well with X11, it is very accessible when running GUI vim remotely from Linux server connecting to other X Windows implementations.

Please include the package in repository.

vim-lesstif is currently dropped from the Debian packaging on purpose. As lesstif is in universe (and vim in main) lesstif must first move to main. This wasn't done in the past but I guess there were reasons against doing it.

Sorry, I don't quite understand... Why couldn't vim-lesstif live in Universe as well?

The source package for "vim" is in Ubuntu main and as such can only use build-dependencies from "main" and to build "vim-lesstif", vim needs to build-depend on "lesstif2". One option would be to get "lesstif2" to main but for that one would need to convince those people who decide which packages get into main that moving "lesstif2" to main is worth it.

I think this should be marked as "Fix released", since oneiric has vim-lesstif as a transitional package to vim-athena.
(I would prefer the real vim-lesstif, myself)
