npm install inside vm fails with symbolic link and lstat errors

Bug Description

When running npm install within a ubuntu/trusty64 vagrant image from within a mounted shared folder, it fails with symbolic errors and ENOENT lstat errors. On switching the type of the shared folder to "rsync" , there are no errors when running npm install from the same directory.
