Bug Description

Binary package hint: uswsusp

I installed uswsusp (into Feisty), ran s2disk, and attempted to restart the machine. After a moment of disk activity and a few kernel messages the boot stalled. Every time I attempted to repeat the startup the same thing happened. When I tried this in recovery mode the last messages on the screen told me that the card reader had been detected.

Booting from a live CD, I replaced the initrd file created by uswsusp with the backup it had left of the old file and this time the boot worked. When I attempted to revert to uswsusp's initrd I experienced the same problem as before.

The problem was made much worse due to the fact that a Feisty installation doesn't work with non-feisty kernels (hence the need to boot from the live CD).

I should have saved the broken initrd and attached it to this report, but I was so anxious to purge it from my system that I didn't think of it in time. Sorry.

For anyone else experiencing this problem, the quickest way to get your machine working again is to edit the "initrd" line in grub (by pressing the E key) and adding ".bak" to the end of it. Then remove uswsusp using synaptic/apt-get/whatever.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I noticed the package your bugging is updated in Maverick. Does this occur in it? If so, please feel free to mark this bug as new. Thanks in advance!
