Bug Description
I recently upgraded my Kubuntu installation to Dapper, but since then I've been having problems sometimes with the machine hanging on shutdown.
It occurs just about the point where X-Windows closes and Usplash takes over the screen. Quite frequently, the screen will go blank and the machine stops responding to input.
On occasions that the machine does shutdown/reboot, the usplash screen will appear, but approx 70% of the time, the Kubuntu graphic appears corrupted (green blocks across the screen, things like that).
This made me think that maybe Usplash is experiencing some form of corruption, so I uninstalled it. The machine now shuts down fine each time.
It might be a problem with the interaction between Usplash and X-Windows, because I am running the ATi fglrx driver from the restricted dpkgs on my Radeon 9600.
On the occasions that the machine doesn't /appear/ to be shutting down. Could you try leaving it 5 minutes and see if it did infact power-off in the end?
Could you also check whether this problem occurs using the open-source 'ati' driver, instead of the 'fglrx'.
These two points should help to track down the likely causes.
