Funky Colors on Shutdown Screen when using vga= modes

Bug Description

1) Installed live-cd dapper on my dell inspiron 8200. Nvidia Geforce 2.

2) The boot up logo looks fine (I.e., the gold-colored ubuntu logo that shows up while the booting messages scroll past.)

3) When I shut down, the logo is psychadelic--as if the color mappings are screwed up. I hadn't installed the fancy nvidia drivers yet, I was still working from the default set.

Update : This bug seems to appear only when people use vga= with grub

Thanks for your bug report. Last comment date was 2006-11-04, more than one year ago. With the upcoming release 8.04 Hardy Heron being in serious development, can you provide informations about this bug on a more recent ubuntu release? Can you reproduce this bug in Gutsy or Hardy alpha 5 (should be ready tomorrow). Thanks again for your contribution.

I have left ubuntu for a while. I might have a look at it again at a later
time. As far as I remember the bug disapeared in Gutsy.

Regards,

Jakob

Aleksander Blomskøld, David Tester : Can someone else give more informations about the status of this bug in Gutsy? Thanks for your contribution so far.

I'm not sure, if this is the same bug, but as soon as I start X, my console's colors get all messed up and are hardly readable (very dark colors, and darkred instead of cyan, yellow instead of blue etc.)
Of course, this also affects the shutdown splash, which has completely wrong colors this way as well.

Maybe one further note: when I do a 'screenshot' with fbgrab, all colors are perfectly okay, and the bug doesn't occur if I don't start X at all. Terminating X doesn't restore original colors.

Here are the files. Be aware that these are the files with which this
bug is *no more* reproducable.
I had this bug with the 2.6.24-15-generic, which I just updated to -16
I remember that when the bug occured the kernel options were :

quiet locale=de_DE vga=789 splash
or
quit locale=de_DE vga=791 splash

although it now says "....vga=773..."

Also, my graphics card is a Radeon Mobility 9600, not 9700

I do not know how to start X manually, so i can not test the other case
you mentioned.

Jan-Philipp Litza : You were able to reproduce this bug. Can you try to reproduce this bug with 2.6.24-16-generic linux kernel to see if it's also fixed for you?

Daniel Kessel : Thanks for your confirmation. Since you can't reproduce this bug with latest kernel, we can assume that it was probably fixed unless you can still reproduce it under some circumstances.

keulieminogue : Thanks for your comment, can you upgrade all package to make sure that your Hardy is up-to-date, and then if the bug is still there, provide :

1. Your /boot/grub/menu.lst file
2. The file created by that command on a terminal : lspci -nnvv > lspci-nnvv.txt

Hi there

I can say, that the fu(n)ky colors will not appear, when i dont use the nvidia driver. When i activate it, than X will be killed while shuddown and no download-splash-screen will apear.

I attached the lspci.txt file! I hope that helps.

All in all.... the nvidia driver sucks on shutdown.

Saivann Carignan (oxmosys) wrote :

keulieminogue : Can you also provide your /boot/grub/menu.lst file like I asked? Also, do you get funky colors when you use restricted nvidia drivers or you don't get any splash screen? If you have a different behavior from usplash, you should probably open a new bug report since it may not be the same bug. The nvidia drivers is only used by X but not by usplash, so my understanding is that probably that these drivers corrupt the consoles when used through X. It would be important to have your /boot/grub/menu.lst file since your boot options are in that file.

keulieminogue : I see that you have vga=791, #vga=791 and irqpoll in your boot options. Can you remove these options one by one and try each time to see if you can reproduce the bug? Also, since you can't reproduce this bug (which was funky colors at shutdown), I suggest that you open a new bug report about this and that you include a detailed description and all the files that I asked you previously. Thanks for your contribution so far.

I set the status of this bug report to fix released, however if someone can still reproduce the issue with latest Hardy release, please comment and/or re-open the bug report. Thanks!

I have the funky colours. They were fine in Gutsy but after an upgrade to Hardy, they freaked out... As the original description; boot splash is fine, shutdown splash is inverted.

I'm having an ATI X300SE (PCI-e), and I'm using the open drivers. Problem is independent of if Compiz is enabled or not. My system is up-to-date.

Attaching menu.lst, tell me whatever you need to know (or if I should report a new bug or something). Bug 127280 seemed less relevant as the title suggested nVidia only.

Hi,
Just wanted to confirm this bug on Ubuntu 8.04

I used to have the same problem on my computer (ATI Radeon 9250 card, using the open source drivers): funky splash colors on shutdown + very dark colors in the console modes.
However, I had a vga=791 in my menu.lst, so I removed it.
Now everything is fine, no more funky colors at shutdown and the consloe colors are ok.

So here are my conclusions:
1) There are 2 problems which seem to have the same cause: funky splash colors on shutdown + very dark colors in the console modes.
2) Removing any "vga=" statement from menu.lst solves the problem.

@Saïvann Carignan: I hope this helps :)

Btw - some more details about my machine:
 kernel = 2.6.24-16-generic
distribution = Kiwi Linux 8.04, based on Ubuntu 8.04
+ I attached the output of "lspci -vvnn"

hi,
Despite going through all the modifications above, I still had the problem. I am working on hp Pavillion tx1205us, recently upgraded to Hardy Heron.

However, I could solve the problem by installing an earlier version of nvidia. "jockey-gtk" installs "nvidia-glx-new". I am not very good with Debian programming. So, I installed "nvidia-glx-envy" instead using "envyng-gtk" which has a nice GUI and does a nice job of enabling the driver as well. Note by default it will install "nvidia-glx-new-envy". So I had to manually choose an earlier version.

Given the warnings on the website of envy, I would be very grateful if someone can post how, to enable "nvidia-glx" (which can be installed using synaptic or apt-get).

thanks

hara : The problem you have is bug 127280, which is caused by a specific version of the closed-source nvidia drivers. The only difference between nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-envy is probably only the nvidia drivers version.

Thank you Saivann,
I got into other problems like X failing after that (see my previous comment).

There was a problem in my menu.lst... I had included "noapic". To make gutsy run on my laptop I needed that.
Hardy does not seem to require that anymore. I did a fresh install of Hardy. The new menu.lst does not have noapic. I do not have any problems with usplash anymore.

may I add just my 2 cents:
I run Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1 with a Radeon 9200 card. I had this problem (funky colors on shutdown splash) presumably after a kernel update, that added a line ending with vga=792 (1024x768, 16M colors) to grub's menu.lst. Not only the shutdown splash was affected, but also the full screen terminal modes (alt-F[1-6]), showing strange and very dark colors, barely readable.

This problem went away when I removed the vga option, but terminals where at 640x480. I tried vga=791 (1024x768, 64k colors): problem remained, and vga=773 (1024x768, 256 colors): problem fixed! It seems that terminal modes with more than 256 colors are not supported (by my card? the kernel driver?)

So anybody affected by this bug: try replacing the vga mode in the corresponding line of /boot/grub/menu.lst with one with the same resolution, but only 256 colors. This will probably fix it.
