Bug Description

Dell Vostro 1400
Dell Vostro 1720
Dell Latitude D830
Dell XPS M1530
Dell XPS M1330
Dell Inspiron 1520
HP dv6838TX

And also on this main board:
Asus P5B Deluxe

On Intrepid it still occures sometime's but it's even worse.

Now my machine beeps for like 10 seconds, and then my laptop-screen gets all deformed, like its broken, and the boot process just stops there.

I've been experiencing this problem with my HP laptop (model no: dv6838TX) as well.

I get the loud beep when starting up the Intrepid Alpha 4 installation CD. I immediately restarted the machine and choose safe mode install which did not have this problem. After installation, the beep came back soon after kernel load. I have yet to try disabling usplash, I will give it a go next.

about the same boot problem for me on ASUS A50VM.
Sometimes the system boot normally.

Sometimes it beep and display boot text until the log screen, and then start normally.
Sometimes the beeps don't stop after log screen.
In the worst cases, the system hang up and display black screen (?? num lock led flashing). No way to get out of that except turning off.

Here is the result on a dmesg command for

Hi together,

I think I found the reason for the beep and the white screen that sometimes occurs:
I edited my /boot/grub/menu.lst. There is a line for the defoptions. Here is the line causing the beep:
-----%<-----
# defoptions=splash=quiet
-----%<-----
And here without the beep:
-----%<-----
# defoptions=quiet splash=quiet
-----%<-----

Omitting the "quiet" itself adds text below the ubuntu logo with the current boot actions.
I have a Dell XPS M1530, too. But I think, the reason is the boot text turned on.

Can you confirm this?

Greetings, Tobias

With my machine (GA-P35-DS4) it beeps sometimes and shows a black screen.
Then there is a constant beep-sound which only stops by executing the beep command after boot.

I tried with and without the quiet option. It does not occur if usplash is disabled.

If I add quiet to the kernel boot options it doesn't happen, but the splash screen is disabled completely.

Hi all,

Karmic 2.6.31-5 Kernel: still loud beep.

Beep only happens when:
1. Grub's menu list has entry: # defoptions=splash=quiet
2. The nvidia module is installed

If one of the above options does not match, no beep here.

The installed nvidia module causes also a white screen before shutting down.
