Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make Ubuntu better.

is usplash enabled on boot time?
to enable it (for one time):

1.Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2.Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press "e" to edit it.
3.Select the "kernel" line and press "e" to edit it.
4.At the end of the line, add "splash" and "quiet" and press "enter".
5.Type "b" to boot the custom boot line.

I tried the above suggestion with no success. The computer still does not have a Graphical Booting.

What happens after you press e? What is displayed on the line?

If "splash" is already there, can you remove it? You won't be able to have a graphical boot, but that way your screen will not be blank.

The following screen appears:
root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/vnlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic
initrd /boot/initrd.ing-2.6.24-16-generic
quiet

I did two additional tests:
1) I erased quiet
result: No change. A Blank, Black screen for approx 180 seconds.
Then,
2) I added to the end: quiet splash
result: no change. Still a Black Blank screen.

Some of the latest Update, ( I don't know which ), has reduced the boot time to 59 seconds.
But still a Blank, Black screen during Booting and Shutdown. No Graphic Interface of any sort!.

Thank you very much for providing these informations. This bug has been already identified as bug 68012 and happens with most or all Intel 828xx cards. As a workaround, you can access the BIOS of your computer and try to increase "Onboard Video Buffer" from 1 MB to 8 MB. Since this bug report is a duplicate, I mark it as such. Thanks again for the time you spent to improve that bug report.

Thank you for your attention.
I want to point out that the same PC was working properly when was
loaded with Ubuntu 7.04 and Kernel 2.16.15-23-i386 as reported by me in
Bug #126433.
Only after the update to Kernel 2.6.20-16 the PC start to malfunction
and it has done so despite the various Update and Upgrade.
Should not an Update improve a system instead of rendering it worse!.

Gaetano Arena

Mr. S. Carignan,
I increased the Video memory to 8 MegaByte as suggested by you, and the
PC now works fine.
Gratefully I thank you for your effort and
I remain yours,

Thank you for your confirmation! At least this bug is now well known so developers can take a look at this and easily reproduce and work on it. I can't fix this actually because I am not a developer (sorry). At least, you can now enjoy a full working usplash without any side effects. You said that the boot time of your PC reduced, can you put a comment about this in bug 126433 ? I think that the overall normal boot time for ubuntu is around 40-50 seconds.

Mr S. Carignan,
after increasing the Video Memory to 8 MByte, as per your suggestion,
the booting time, (measured up to the time when the screen changes to a
light color ), is reduced to only 33 Seconds!!.

Gaetano Arena
