Bug Description

The current daily-live cd for PowerPC (20080413) does not boot without the video=ofonly option on my G3 iMac (slotloading). After the message "Loading, please wait..." it just stops with a ticking noise from the cdrom drive.

I think it might be a bug in usplash since the 'live-nosplash' boot option works fine.

The same problem has been reported for an Apple TiBook on ubuntuforums.org.

After further investigation I have found that the ticking noise is not from the cdrom drive but from the monitor. I seems like it is switching between modes all the time or going in and out of power-save mode. The screen is black with no flicker.

I managed to install hardy PowerPC from the 20080420 alternate cd bug was bitten by this bug on the installed system. I could not boot - not even with video=ofonly. This is a showstopper!

A work-around is to make sure that yaboot is installed with the line 'append="quiet splash"' in /etc/yaboot.conf.

That should have been: make sure that yaboot is NOT installed with the line 'append="quiet splash"' in /etc/yaboot.conf.

I confirm with the Hardy Final Release.

Confirmed here as well. I fixed it by booting from a gentoo livecd removing 'append="quiet splash"' and following the yaboot installation instructions on the gentoo site.

The same or similar here. LED of power button pulses vaguely with vague pulsing or clicking noise. Slot-loading G3 with FireWire.

Kubuntu live CD does the same.

(In my case the alternate CDs don't work either, always fail at some point in the installation routine, despite the media passing checks, but that's a separate issue.)

Where 8.04 fails, might I succeed with a version 7 installation followed by an online upgrade?

It is still not fixed in 8.10 daily builds. What is happening with this bug?

Another observation: After installation from a desktop CD booted with live-nosplash the the installed system boots without problems. It seems the problem with the splash screen is only on the desktop CD.
