Bug Description

Running a Sony Vaio PCG-983L with an Intel 82815 Graphics Chip, the Ubuntu splash screen (while booting) fails to appear. If I allow the computer to boot with a blank screen, and the X server loads correctly, Feisty runs fine. If X encounters an error, however, and fails to load, the screen d,splays a nearly-unusable display mode, partially garbled, with scrolling anomalies (screen refreshes when scrolling UP, not DOWN, etc.)

If the "splash" boot option is removed, the computer starts up fine, and displays the text-only info while starting, in a perfectly legible resolution... It's just not as pretty as when there's a splash screen. ;)

The same problem is noticed while shutting down/restarting-- no splash screen.
