2006-09-27 05:27:51 Sarah Kowalik None: statusexplanation Firstly, you might want to check out https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo Also, you *do* need to create a root account, as that is what's used for the recovery mode.
2006-09-27 05:56:30 Tom description When a new copy of Ubuntu is installed on a PC (Intel Pentium 4) there is an option to create an user account. By default Ubuntu creates an account called "root" which is the main administrative account. --$$-- The Bug --$$-- At the account creation page while installing, a "root" account CAN be made. --$$-- The Bug --$$-- Since in Ubuntu, the "root "account must be enabled to access via regular login screen and by default it is disabled, the "root" account created on installation cannot be logged in! Now there is a requirement to re-install the entire OS. Ubuntu must not allow the creation of "root" accounts while installation. When a new copy of Ubuntu is installed on a PC, it asks me to enter a username, password and retype the password to create a new user account. Noobish as I was, I entered "root" as username with a password and retyped the password. The installer accepted the username and password and went on.. until.. it was done installing. The bug reared it's ugly antennae when I entered the login screen and typed the username and password I had earlier created. It said that the root account was locked by default and that I had to login to a normal (non-root) user account. Now, I hadn't created any other user account during installation as the installer gladly accepted root as username. Stranded as I was, I had to re-install the operating system. Windows seems to actually check user input in such situations.. and reports when I enter Administrator as the username for a new user account during the installation of XP. (Those five textboxes with the clippet-like coin asking me to enter the names of the users of this computer..) (Edited on behalf of Ganesh)

This is a real installer bug and should not have been rejected. It's also bug 50036.
