Bug Description

Binary package hint: usb-creator

I have tried with multiple iso files (11.04 and 10.10) and this happens every time I try to create a USB startup disk. The prcoess gets to 99% and then ends with "An uncaught exception was raised: [Errno 2] No such file or directory. The pop up box only gives me the option to Quit.

Here is the screenshot of the very un-ubuntu error message.

Translation:
An uncaught exception has occurred
Errno 2 File or folder does not exist.

A proper Ubuntu error message should give more details as to which file or folder it is expecting.

This is clearly an authorization problem.

In order to debug
I started the program first with:

Running from the Ubuntu System menu.

What happens is I get 3 policy windows.
1 for starting the app
1 for mounting the usb disk
1 for writing the bootloader
then it fails.

so I tried from the comand line using:
usb-creator-gtk -s

This resulted in a pop up box saying installation of the bootloader failed, after this popup box a policy (see screenshot) window popped up asking for my password after the fact. By then it was too late, the installer had stopped.

then I tried with:
gksu usb-creator-gtk -s

This command made a successful disk.

So the issue I suspect is that the program is asking for authorization to late in the process.

I have the same problem on Kubuntu 10.10. When I look through the mailing lists, I find other reports for the same problem that go back to at least Kubuntu 9.

It happens to me every time I create a USB key with reserved extra space, if I create a USB key with settings and documents discarded the error does not occur.

I had the same error. Thanks to Damion in post #4 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usb-creator/+bug/777957/comments/4) I could create a successful disk after running the command as superuser/root.
