live-usb persistence: mtab accumulates appendages

usb-creator (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: usb-creator

With a live-usb of ubuntu8.10 via included usb-creator

mtab accumulates appendages of:
tmpfs ... ... /lib/modules/<kernel-version>/volatile

seemingly on each shutdown or system crash (I they run about even in number...I still need to resolve the question of which...but either way, this shouldn't occur.)

I've deleted the extra lines manually...but how to prevent their generation?

so after a few deliberate crashes, I've noticed stale info from df giving usage of disks mounted before crashes but not mounted after restart. My guess is that mtab is being read from casper-rw after being generated on boot, overwriting the correct state.

at least after one clean shutdown nothing new added.

I'm confirming
I've booted into live-usb to copy /home partition to another drive, but found almost all of partitions in the system (desktop with four drives and 8 partitions) mounted incorrectly, some of them into same named mountpoint, which didn't exist for a while. The only way this mountpoint could emerge - is from some history, so I found A LOT of inexistent mountpoints in /etc/mtab.
Removing /etc/mtab then logging out and in cleared the mess.

Looking at from Bug #302703 it seems these two issues are related, if this can be confirmed, please mark as duplicate.
