usb-creator-gtk tells me there is not enough free space on a completely emtpy USB stick

Bug Description
why does usb-creator-gtk have to be so buggy?
It is now telling me that my empty 4GB USB stick doesn't have enough free space for a 1GB desktop iso image.
see the attached screen shot. And here is info on my device:
/dev/sdb1 3.8G 20M 3.8G 1% /media/
just to make sure that the disk and fs on it were good, I creted a couple files on it, but there is 3.8GB free space, usb-creator-gtk fails to see that and refuses to make my bootable usb stick.
Once again, I have to fall back to unetbootin because this tool is broken.
