Silently fails to create startup disk - that is, creates a disk that won't boot

As already reported in #1243382, half of the times the Startup Disk Creator crashes during the process of creating a bootable disk on a USB pendrive.

The other half of the times, however, it ends up telling you the disk has been created succesfully.
Sometimes this is true (I once succesfully created a bootable disk that worked fine), but sometimes it is not.

I created a bootable disk from an iso image of Ubuntu 12.04. It apparently finished succesfully. Then I lost one day trying to have it boot on another computer, thinking there was something wrong with that machine that would not let me boot from the usb pendrive, and desperately playing around with its BIOS settings. Untill I decided to re-burn the image, on the very same pendrive.
At first it crashed. Then, at the second try it succeeded, and this time the pendrive was fine and actually booted.

This tool is completely unreliable. Until it is fixed it should be removed from ubuntu and replaced by some reliable alternative. Having it as the recommended officially documented way of creating a live pendrive makes you waste a lot of time.
