A popup box also appears
The following packages requested additional data downloads after package installation, but the data could not be downloaded or could not be processed.

ttf-mscorefonts-installer

The download will be attempted again later, or you can try the download again now. Running this command requires an active Internet connection.

With two buttons, one for close and another for "Run this action now" .
"Run this action now" opens a terminal and after a minute or so the terminal window closes, but the popup box remains.

Also note in another attempt, the python error didn't occur, but the popup box still gets displayed.

just had the same issue. i guess it's because of sourceforge which seems to have trouble with there servers. ->try: http://sourceforge.net/projects/corefonts/files/

Just tried it again. For me at least it is solved. Sourceforge is up and running again!

While this issue it's resolved, you can use the command "dpkg-reconfigure" to set another SourceForge mirror to download the fonts, or even set a local folder. However, I don't know how to call the package triggers again, once the package is already installed and configured.

I also have tried to use "dpkg-preconfigure" and "dpkg -i" later, but the preconfiguration seems to be ignored.

Because I didn't know how to change the assigned download server in the configuration finally, today I thought about a different approach, which consisted in using a different DNS server, just to check if maybe the name of the mirror server wasn't being resolved properly by my current DNS server... And it worked :) .

I simply used the public DNS servers from Google (8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4), installed, and then turned back to my DNS servers again.

I guess that this problem will get solved once that the right addresses propagates to every existing DNS server.

It seems this wasn't a bug in update-notifier, but a problem with the download server. From what I see in the logs, update-notifier was working as designed.
