Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-notifier

When I click on notification icon, Update manager doesn't appears. Instead, "package information" dialog appears, and then exits.

I can't open the update manager clicking on the notification icon. However, I can open it via System->Administration->Update manager.

This is the dialog that appears when I click on the notification icon: the "downloading package information" dialog. And then exits.

Okay, now I know where's the problem. It's a bug in update-notifier.

Steps to reproduce:

0. There must be updates available, in order to see the notification icon.
1. Right-click on the notification icon, and select "Check for updates".
2. The "downloading package information" dialog appears, like the attachment above, and then exits.
3. The notification icon goes gray. Wait until it goes orange again.
4. Now, click on the notification icon. You can see that does the "check for updates" again!

To summarize: update-notifier "remembers" the last action you did it with the right-click menu, and since then, when you click on notification icon, it does that action, and not the default one (open update manager).

Try, for example, changing "Check for updates" to "Start package manager" in step #1 above. When you left-click on it then, it opens Synaptic!

Changing to "Confirmed" because IMO it's a reproducible, easy to reproduce, bug.

Thanks for your bugreport.

This was fixed in edgy. It won't remember the last action by default. Powerusers can still set the default action via gconf.
