Bug Description

When I click on the "reload" button in update-manager, and if some update are available, the program displays the "new updates are available" even if I _do_ the right things to get them !

If the reload has been produced by the user's volunty, the screen should not be displayed...

An idea : don't display the screen if a package manager is open.

Thanks for your bugreport.

Unfortunately this is not trivial to do because to detect if a package manager runs it would need to test the lock-file that is owned by root.

The problem isn't getting solved, so we can go further than the dapper release day :

Is it better to merge all the package managers ? (Add applications, Synaptic, Update notifier, ...)

Or something else changing the design of the current package management, you're the hackers, so you're able to understand how packages have to be managed and subsequently how the package managers have to be developped...

It may be too late to fix this issue for dapper. This only happens if no notification icon is displayed and the reload causes the notification icon to come up.

For dapper+1 we will probably want to use dbus to see if update-manager is runing.

Why not use dbus to communicate between the different applications? Wouldn't that solve the privileges issue?

I just noticed that the icon, alerting the user to new updates, greys out when the Update Manager starts downloading the updates and gives the tooltip "A package manager is working". How is the icon finding out that the Update Manager has started doing this?

Sorry Michael, just re-read this and saw the note on dbus in your 11-04 comment.

This is still happening in Intrepid but I have no problems with it. It's not annoying or anything. The last comment was more than 2 years ago, maybe this behavior won't be changed?
