Thanks for your bug. Is update-notifier installed/running with your session?

the ps aux command shows update-notifier as a running process. it also shows
it using 19.6 % cpu.

Do you see other tray icon? E.g. rhythmbox, gnome-power-manager, quodlibet? Or is it only update-notifier that is not showing up?

thanks,

Same problem here. update-notifier is running, but nothing in the panel. Other applications _do_ appear in the panel.

Interessting, did you changed the permissions yourself? Or did that just "happen" somehow?

Please run:
$ sudo chmod 644 /etc/apt/sources.list

to fix the permissions. This should make update-notifier work again :)

Cheers,
 Michael

I cannot remember setting the permissions manually. And i cannot think of a
reason for doing so.

Could this be a configuration left-over from hoary or breezy?

And btw. The update notifier works again.

AFAIK no version of any apt package sets this to rw-rw---- Therefor, and
since update-notifier works again I'm inclined to reject this bug. Would
you agree with that?

Thanks for verifiying the issue. I added some code to update-notifier to better detect situations like this and report appropriate erros to the user.

I have the same problem, update-notifier is running, the permissions for sources.list are correct i.e.

$ ls -l -h /etc/apt/sources.list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.9K 2006-06-04 18:00 /etc/apt/sources.list

update-notifier shows up in panel for other admin users (created after an upgrade from breezy to dapper) but does not show up for my account (created before the upgrade).

So I don't think this bug is closed...

cheers
