Bug Description
personally I was not aware of a crash until the pop-up gave notice. It was the situation after having the update done, seeing this pop-up at the end and pondering the idea of a backup followed by the step-up from 16.04 to 18.04. Then revised the sources of the ubuntu update process and unchecked two ones of the backports and after that I checked the pop-up note that declared the possibility of the step-up OK. Then repeated the updating with sudo apt-get update/upgrade just to see if this changes work - still too much Ign to see. Where to uncheck 14.04 trusty tahr DVD/CD? About then it just happened to get the crash-note.

it's hard to clarify ones memories of such a mostly 'unreal' experience like the everyday interaction with a computer. Why unreal? This is, because what happens can't be touched nor heard, just be seen. Moreover I never talk to others about that and the mentioned procedures are not part of my active vocabulary. I suppose a developer has more of a fluently used practice in this field. So be kind and patient with me, please.
