Unfortunately, your bug report included no dpkg log output. Without this information, it's impossible to diagnose the cause of this failure.

The absence of the dpkg log itself suggests a more fundamental problem with your system, unrelated to update-notifier-common.

Since this is not an actionable bug report, I'm closing it as invalid.
