Bug Description

I have set update manager to automatically downloaded upgradable packages
(Ubuntu Update Manager->Preferences->Preferences).

Now when I log in, the package list is updated, the update icon appears while
the downloading is happening in the background. I click on the icon, enter my
password and update manager is shown. I click Install and get the following error:

"E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily
unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another
process using it?"

Sorry, the correct error message is:

"E: Could not get lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (11 Resource
temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the download directory"

The dialog closed and I had to copy the error from somewhere else (I thought it
was the same).

Thanks for your bugreport.

update-notifier (0.38.8) detects downloads and installs in progress now and will
give visual feedback. Please reopen if you have any further problems
