This bug's affecting me exactly like everyone else, but I've found that deleting all instances of the string "independent" from /etc/apt/sources.list allows me to bypass this bug temporarily.

Make a backup of your sources.list first if you decide to do the same!

Zilvador,
no, it doesn't. What bluebomber proposes is not a solution, just a bit more complicated way to turn off "main" and "restricted" channels along with "proposed" updates. Check yours software sources app, if you don't believe me. :)

The dist upgrade is placing the 'independent' repo on all of the source URIs in sources.list. When did 'independent' repos get into the dist channels? Oh, wait... http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/ . They aren't. :) just the regulars.
Easy fix.

open up your sources.list in etc/apt as root, delete 'independent' from every dist url and save.

Attached is the corrected sources.list for reference,

Do you know where this independent line in /etc/apt/sources.list came from? There is no code in update-manager, nor software-properties-gtk to add an independent line to it. Additionally, do you know what the complete line with independent looked like? Thanks in advance.

I found a temporary solition.
Open your sources.list file with gedit.

sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/22.05.2012.sources.list.bak
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Search independent keyword and comment all lines save and close.
Now try sudo apt-get update, it works for me but this changes probably disable major and dist updates.
