update:

running update-manager again: proposes partial upgrade

initiated partial upgrade.

a dialogue appears:
partial upgrade aborted; 'your system does not contain ubunt-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop or lubunt-desktop. version cannot be determined. can continue' (rough translation from Dutch)

clicked OK

a dialogue appears:
the package 'Unity' is selected for removal, but is listed on the do-not-remove blackist. cannot continue.

upgrade aborted, update-manager closed.

update:

opened a terminal.
entered command: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
-ubuntu-desktop is already installed and is the latest version

entered command: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
-upgrade followed through OK

ran update-manager again. results: still same as post #5
