Bug Description

----------User Summary (Clipped from post 8)----------
If you click on a checkbox and it doesn't get selected, some sort of popup should appear saying "this item cannot be selected for this and that reason".
----------------------------------------------------

Update Manager shows four available updates under "Release Update".
The checkbox next to the title "Release Updates" itself is checked, but the checkbox next to the four items under it are all unchecked and I can't check them. If I click on them nothing happens.

Below it says "There are no updates to install".

If these are updates to packages that are not installed, they shouldn't be shown. If they can't be installed for some reason, an error message should be shown telling the reason.

What's a dist-upgrade? How do I run it?
If that means upgrading to the latest distribution, I have already the latest distribution installed (11.10)

In a terminal run:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

No, running dist-upgrade doesn't solve the problem.

The output from dist-upgrade was:

The following packages have been kept back:
  libboost-date-time-dev libboost-dev libboost-iostreams-dev
  libboost-regex-dev

plus there were a few packages that _were_ installed or upgraded. I lost the output from dist-upgrade, but if I run it again it shows the part mentioned above, plus 0 upgraded / 0 installed etc.

The 4 packages that were "kept back" actually are the ones that show up unchecked and uncheckable in Update Manager.
I'm not sure whether there were more of them before I ran dist-upgrade.

$ apt-cache policy libboost-dev
libboost-dev:
  Installed: 1.42.0.1ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1.46.1.1
  Version table:
     1.46.1.1 0
        500 http://es.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main i386 Packages
 *** 1.42.0.1ubuntu1 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

And the issue persists.

Note that this report is about the user interface of UpdateManager. Even assuming there is a good reason why the updates of some packages are kept back, showing checkboxes that cannot be checked without giving any information about why they can't be checked doesn't make any sense and is what this report is about. If you click on a checkbox and it doesn't get selected, some sort of popup should appear saying "this item cannot be selected for this and that reason".

Another story is why apt-get does not update these package in the first place, which I'd love to figure out but may be the expected behavior for a good reason (though I'd expect it to tell me WHY the given packages are being "kept back").

Thanks for clarifying that. Seems like a good wishlist item. Marking triaged and moving to wishlist.

What matteo sisti sette (matteosistisette) says is exactly the thing that happende to me. He explained the situation well, and here is my screenshot of the update manager:

http://d1203.hizliresim.com/v/1/358xy.png

I have the same problems with him, the packages are seemed to be updated, but I cannot select them and no error is shown when I try to check them. Also, at the bottom it says "There is no update to install".

I also have Ubuntu 11.10, and I have found another one who has encountered this problem here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1537421

I think it is not a whishlist but an error of update manager or sources list or whatever...
