Bug Description

When trying to upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10, this is what I get:

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug update-manager' in a terminal.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add the log files from '/var/log/dist-upgrade/' to this bug report as separate attachments? Thanks in advance.

btw, is there a quick manual thingy i can do in order to let my upgrade go forward or shall I just wait for an official fix ?
(i prefer to avoid a clean re-install of the os)

thanks a lot.

From what I can see from the logs, it seems you had gnome-shell installed in 11.04. It may be that unistalling it will allow you to complete the upgrade, you can always install it back if you want once the upgrade has been completed.

Virtual packages like 'gnome-shell' can't be removed

It seems that you upgraded to 11.04 just shortly before trying to upgrade to 11.10. But, had you installed or tried to install gnome-shell in 11.04? There are some references to it in the logs you provided, that's why I ask.

No, I have not tried to install gnome-shell.

I was running 10.10 for quite some time, and then decided to upgrade to 11.04 and then immediately (after a clean reboot) to upgrade to 11.10.

Thank you for your help.

Have you tried to upgrade again? It seems that some overloaded mirrors where creating misleading errors just after releasing 11.10.

Yeah, I have re-tried several times (including today), to no avail :(

Can you post again the logs of /var/log/dist-upgrade for one of these recent failures?

Try to uninstall nspluginviewer and see if the update proceeds.
