i tried to update to 11.10 and a message came up.

it also said to mention /var/log/dist-upgrade/in the report

how do i get log and compress it to send?

Open the File Browser/Nautilus/Home Folder -> click File System from the sidebar -> browse to /var/log/dist-upgrade ->right-click it-> select Compress from the menu-> enter a filename and select the location where you want to save the file. Then attach the compressed file to this bug report.

my nautilus home folder is empty? where else would info be?

You don't have to have anything in your home folder. You just have to click the File System from the sidebar (just mentioned home folder for you to know how to easily open the file browser). After you have opened a file browser, follow the steps from above.
