distribution upgrade failed (ubuntu-minimal not found)

Binary package hint: update-manager

Trying to upgrade my distribution from 10.10 to 11.04 failed and show the message:

"Invalid package information"
After your package information was updated the essential package 'ubuntu-minimal' can not be found anymore. This indicades a serious error, please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include he files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

This is usually caused by a server error (server overload)

Please try again or use another mirror and tell if it is still an error.

I was able to upgrade my distribution some time later without problems. Maybe the returned message in case of server overload should be different (the actual message says "serious error").
