update-manager hangs on update; error message follows

On running update manager, system hung; I was told by system to include the following message:

E: Problem parsing dependency Depends
E: Error occurred while processing sgt-puzzles (NewVersion2)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Ubuntu Maverick; I tried to get the version, but running apt-cache policy for both "update-manager" and "apt-get" resulted in segmentation fault; upon further direction, I will happily run this again and report back.

Update manager, package manager, and software center will not now run.

Please try the command 'sudo apt-get install -f' from the terminal, see if it does help.

Tried that, I get these messages:

No. I tried to install Natty, and wound up having problems, so now I'm
using Fedora 15, which is working nicely.
