If the package xserver-xorg-video-nouveau is installed, in several cases the 10.04 to 10.10 upgrade fails with the error message

"Could not determine the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu"

Several persons have reported that after removal of that package the upgrade was successful.

Try this workaround: Open a terminal and enter the command:

sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

and try the upgrade again.

Thank you for your reply, I have managed to up grade by following the instructions below and the upgrade was successful. I am now reporting another bug, when i come in to the log in and password screen i cannot load ubuntu default settings, fail safe or it used to be gnome. when I do I receive a blank screen with a white panel below, the mouse works on the screen but nothing else is shown such as widgets or menu's, no keyboard keys are responsive it is almost like a crash. please help me with this problem as the only screen that loads is the KDE desktop I prefer the Ubuntu default.

Kind regards

Shyam
