Bug Description
Binary package hint: update-manager
This is sporadic - A clutzy workaround that I found is to always click 'Settings' first which does bring up the password dialog. However I deliberately avoided the workaround so as to send the bug report with system info when it is actually happening.
Very inconvenient and discouraging for Linux newbie.

I'm having trouble following your description. You open update-manager from the menu, and instead of clicking settings, you do what exactly?
