Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

During the upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 release , I have received a error dialog box stating the following:
"Invalid package information

After your package information was updated the essential package 'ubuntu-minimal' can not be found anymore.
This indicates a serious error, please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report."

And the system restored to old state(10.04).

Thanks for your report.

Are you directly connected to the Internet or behind a firewall, proxy, ... or using an apt cache, or having a 10.10 CDROM loaded into your drive or anything else unusual that you could think ?

It is directly connected to internet. Not using the CD to install.
And I have tried to upgrade using "update-manager -d" and clicked upgrade and followed the on screen instructions.
Unusual activity:
First time i got an error stating "Release notes couldnt be downloaded" and i clicked upgrade again then the release notes got downloaded and been taken to Distribution upgrade screen.

Thanks for the additional info. I'm marking this report as duplicate of bug 631426, but I still don't see what is blocking the upgrade excepted a problem with the mirror. It seems to affect mainly users from India.

I received the same error when I try to upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 10.10.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 from a virtual machine of VMWare and behind a firewall.
