Upgrading from Lucid Lynx to Maverick Meerkat fails with error in "calculating upgrade"

Bug Description
Binary package hint: update-manager
I'm on Ubuntu 10.04, running "update-manager -d" , selecting "Upgrade" to upgrade to 10.10. update-manager runs, in the step "Setting new software channels" it comes up with an error dialog with the title "Could not calculate the upgrade". These are the contents of said dialog:
"Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResol
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/
