Could not install upgrades from Kubuntu 9.04 to 9.10

Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Expected successful upgrade.

Saw error message:
"The upgrade is now aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will now run (dpkg --configure -a). Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report. installArchives() failed.'

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 9.10
Release: 9.10

$ apt-cache policy update-manager
update-manager:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1:0.126.9
  Version table:
     1:0.126.9 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic-updates/main Packages

        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages

Appears to have been resolved by running
$ sudo dpkg-divert --remove /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu

To undo a fix for (and proposed in the comments of)
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdesudo/+bug/345776

followed by
$ sudo apt-get -f upgrade

dpkg --configure -a shows no conflicts now.
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
$
