Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

During upgrade testing done according to http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Hardware/X/ProprietaryDrivers , the hardware drivers were removed instead of being upgraded. The driver was properly installed after installing Ubuntu 8.04 and all updates. After upgrading to Lucid, the hardware driver is no longer installed. Xorg.log contains the following:

jhtadmin@justhaveto:~$ grep -E "LoadModule:.*\"nvidia|fglrx|nv|nouveau\"" /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(==) Matched nv as autoconfigured driver 1
(II) LoadModule: "nouveau"
(II) LoadModule: "nv"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so
(II) Module nv: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
(II) UnloadModule: "nv"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so

xorg.conf still exists in /etc/X11 .

same story with latest updates on Lucid:

update-manager remove nvidia-173 and let the system without driver activated, so cant boot. Previously was using nvidia-195.36 without problem on this fresh A2 install and daily updated.

sudo apt-get install -f return error 1 : nvidia-173 fail to install

found the reason on my end:

was due to kernel 2.6.33 i was testing: there is a dkms problem (cant find the kernel, maybe a non conventional naming) with this kernel and all the update-manager task fail on my other kernels.

So i've removed that kernel and can update my system. Anyway thats only a temporary workaround for my system.

dino99: How did you install the 2.6.33 kernel in hardy? This bug is because if you have hardy installed, install the hardware driver, then upgrade, the hardware video driver is removed. Changing the kernel in lucid did not cause that, update-manager did.

hi Charlie,

see post 12, i've had this issue with Lucid already installed and updated, so this kernel 2.6.33 from kernel.ubuntu.com was installed on Lucid, never talk about Hardy on my end.
Just to say that this issue is not only with hardy2lucid upgrading.

This bug was fixed in the package update-manager - 1:0.134.1

---------------
update-manager (1:0.134.1) lucid; urgency=low

  * DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeController.py:
    - honor "DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive" on pkg failure (LP: #538206)
  * DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeQuirks.py:
    - stop apparmor before dpkg starts on hardy -> lucid upgrades to
      avoid potentially confusing error messages during the upgrade
      (LP: #559433)
  * DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeCache.py, DistUpgrade/build-tarball.sh:
    - include obselte nvidia pkgnames to properly transition old
      to new drivers (LP: #553369)
  * DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeViewText.py:
    - show packages that will be removed (because they were auto installed)
      as well (LP: #558438)
    - fix i18n bug in details output
  * UpdateManager/Core/MyCache.py:
    - support third party changelogs by using ArchiveURI() and
      append a similar structure as changelogs.ubuntu.com uses
      (LP: #45129)
  * UpdateManager/Core/MetaRelease.py:
    - do not crash if meta-release file can not be parsed, just remove
      the broken file instead (LP: #558396)
