Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Yesterday I downloaded the Lucid alpha-3 ISO and started to upgrade the following system from 8.04 LTS, after updating the 8.04 system to the latest packages. The upgrade took about 11 hours, and resulted in a partially functional system. I had previously booted the system from an 10.04 alpha3 live CD, which seemed to work reasonably well (This system is identified as 'max' in bug #528767, regarding problems with the live CD). So I decided to try actually upgrading this computer to Lucid.

After the initial update (11 hours later), the system seemed to be running lucid, so I rebooted. The X server would not start, even in low-res mode. BTW I noticed that a special mysql server was running (two instances) during the upgrade, taking up typically about half of CPU time (observed with 'top').

So this morning I booted into recovery mode, and used apt-get to update some more. Over 200 packages were installed.

After rebooting again, the system started up and tried to auto-login, but kept failing to start Gnome, so a login screen kept flashing onto the screen.

At this point, I logged in from another system using ssh, and generated an xorg.conf file using `Xorg -configure`. Also, I had saved an old xorg.conf file in my home directory. I combined the 2 (updating the X driver name and using the Monitor config from the Xorg-generated file into my old xorg.conf).

After the system was successfully updated, I noticed that some mysql and mysql-server packages were missing. I had to reinstall mysql-client and mysql-server metapackages.

On the other hand, the openssh-server settings were maintained through the upgrades, so that I didn't have to change the ~/.ssh/known_hosts file in other systems.
