Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Can't guess meta-package

Your system does not contain a ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop or edubuntu-desktop package and it was not possible to detect which version of Ubuntu you are running.
Please install one of the packages above first using synaptic or apt-get before proceeding.

When i click partial upgrade. This was shown followed by,

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
The package 'ubuntu-desktop' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

This is most likely a transient problem, please try again later

So by any chance do i need to upload anything or did i do anything wrong. Please correct me. Thanks.

This bug affects me also. I have attached only the apt.log since all other files are last modified a few days ago.

It happened to me as well with Lucid beta 2 on amd64.

Attaching the main.log and apt.log. term.log is empty.

My OS history:
Ubuntu 9.04 fresh install, upgraded to 9.10 via update-manager, switched to Kubuntu then Xubuntu. Removed Kubuntu with this command: "apt-get remove kubuntu-desktop kubuntu-artwork-usplash". I don't remember touching ubuntu-desktop package at all.

Happening with the RC as well.

I haven't tried upgrading using the CD yet in case you need more data. I see that this bug has been marked as invalid but I assure you it is not.

This workaround worked for me:
Remove ubuntu-desktop with "apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop". (You'd probably need to do this while you are in a non-gnome desktop.) Then run the upgrade. ubuntu-desktop can be installed after the upgrade.

I ran into this bug today while trying to upgrade my Mythbuntu system remotely using "apt-get dist-upgrade". This was after all repositories have been up to date and third-party disabled. The simple fix is:
apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop
... as mentioned by Aslan Gencer.

I ran in this problem on Ubuntu 21.10 and the workaround suggested by Aslan Gencer worked.
That is, I manually removed the ubuntu-desktop package, then returned to Software Updater and the partial upgrade was completed successfully.
