Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

When I run update-manager with the latest set of updates (kdebase-bin, libgd2-noxpm) it resets my xsession sending me back to the gdm login screen.

update-manager displays the dialog stating "updating the dependency tree", then it reports "downloading the list of changes..." it is at this point my xsession resets.

I'm not familar with python, but I did run update manager with warnings turned on and logged the output:
/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/apt/__init__.py:17: FutureWarning: apt API not stable yet
warnings.warn("apt API not stable yet", FutureWarning)
/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/UpdateManager/UpdateManager.py:372: GtkWarning: gtk_text_buffer_emit_insert: assertion `g_utf8_validate (text, len, NULL)' failed
  changes_buffer.insert(end_iter, line+"\n")
/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/UpdateManager/UpdateManager.py:372: GtkWarning: gtk_text_buffer_emit_insert: assertion `g_utf8_validate (text, len, NULL)' failed
  changes_buffer.insert(end_iter, line+"\n")

The application 'update-manager' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
the application.

This is reproducable for me and i'm holding off updating in case I can provide more debug info.

Bug #49810 is likely the same as this bug.

It is the Gnome Desktop that crashes. This was found in Dapper Current which was upgraded from Breezy, but I've been running Dapper since release date.

Some more info:
AMD 2700XP
ASUS A7N8X-D Motherboard
NVIDIA 6200 video card

If I could get some instruction on debugging python, I may be able to tell at which point update-manager crashes the desktop.

I got the same looks like the same bug as https://launchpad.net/bugs/49810

Am getting this in Dapper 6.06 - Bug #49810 seems to be exactly the same for me too.

I am running Gnome and had about 11 updates - the ones I could see in the box were all KDE ones (I have Konqueror and Scribus installed). Probably very similar to the updates Andre had in Bug #49810

I updated my apt lists using Synaptic. Then before updating my system I ran update-manager from CLI to see if I could get any interesting debugging info.

Now I have 75 updates and update manager seems to be stable, no crashing. The KDE updates are hidden somewhere in the middle. I closed it and reopened it from the toolbar - same thing, no crash.

I scrolled past the KDE updates to no effect either.

I think I have found where the problem lies. On certain packages, just after "Downloading list of changes", as it's about to display the text it crashes.

Each of the following packages would cause a crash at that point:
kcontrol, kdebase-bin, kdebase-data, kdebase-kio-plugins, kdesktop, kfind, kicker, konqueror, kwin, libkonq4

These two and random others that I tested didn't:
qt3-qtconfig, libqt3-mt

If you click on one of the crash causing packages but you're Hiding Details or you're on the Description tab, it does not crash.

If you're on the Description tab, once the details have downloaded if you change back to the Changes tab you can view the changes list and it does not crash.

If you're on the Changes tab and it's started downloading a changelist and you switch to either Hide Details or Description before it's finished, it does not crash.

If you're on the Changes tab and go back to an item that you have safely downloaded the changelist for it earlier, it does not crash.

Today, 06-07-2006 I got this bug again when I want to update. Each time I click on the update button my screen get scrambled and can't go any further. I have to reset X...

I will wait with apt-get via command line until tommorow. Maybe somebody want to contact me do some work and checking for them... If you want will log in to #ubuntu at freenode...

I also experience this issue. When trying to view the changelog of a package, the session crashes and I get dumped back onto the gdm screen. update-manager 0.42.2ubuntu22.
