Hi,

i solved the problem. There was a problem with the splashy package: after removing this package manually i could upgrade to dapper.

Sorry for reporting this as a bug..

Thanks for this update and no need to applogize :)

I still would be interessted in the logs (just to get a better idea what went wrong in the first place) that Sebastian asked for.

Thanks,

I've got the exact two error messages, and nowhere to go...
Looking in the logs, it says it can't install ubuntu-dekstop because of dependencies.

When I try to mark ubuntu-desktop manually in Synaptic, I get an error about firefox-gnome-support not being mark-able. When I try to mark firefox-gnome-support manually, I get the following error:

Depends: firefox (=1.0.8-0ubuntu5.10) but 1.0.7-0ubuntu20 is to be installed

So, do I need to have these versions installed in order to be able to upgrade? I assume the reason that ubuntu-desktop isn't on my machine was that I wanted to uninstall these old versions of software. I'd rather not download openoffice 1.9 again, so that I can upgrade to a more current version, if you know what I mean. similarly, I have Firefox 1.5 running currently; do I need to downgrade this program in order to upgrade my OS? Hopefully I'm missing something, because that doesn't make sense to me.

Looking again at this dependency conflict, I'm not certain it would all work, even if I did re-install all these old programs. (i.e., I need firefox-gnome-support to get ubuntu-desktop, and I need Firefox1.0.8 to get firefox-gnome-support, but I get Firefox 1.0.7 with Ubuntu-desktop?)

Please help. I'm glad to know that mole0815 resolved this simply, but is there a general principle to work around/fix?

I have my /var/log/dist-upgrade-apt.log and /var/log/dist-upgrade.log handy, but I'm not sure how to attach them here (I'm assuming you don't want that in plain text in this post)

Sorry, I found it now, on the right side, under "bug attachments"/Add

This is added more for posterity's sake at the moment

Same as above, except that I'm not sure what this is. Binary?

Now that I get how these attachments are posted, I'll give some update on what I've done.

The three attached files are all from before an upgrade that I have now succedded in doing (hence the comment on posterity). These copies were made when I has having the above trouble upgrading.

But, just in case this helps someone else, what had happened was that I had locked the Firefox1.0.x version in Synaptic in order to keep from downloading things that I wasn't using (having already moved on to 1.5.x). This created the dependency conflict I mentioned above. When I removed the lock and installed firefox 1.0.8 (somehow I don' t think I should have had to do this...), I could reinstall ubuntu-desktop (I hadn't thought that I should need to do this either, but as I went back to this package in Synaptic, I noted a comment about this package being useful to keep around for upgrades...)

With ubuntu-desktop installed, the upgrade went smoothly, and three days of downloading later, I'm up and running in dapper.
