Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

OK. I was using Ubuntu 9.10, and might still be but get the xubuntu closedown and start up screens, and I think that something has gone wrong. CD iso downloaded today 01/11/2009
I initially downloaded the alternate install CD so as to upgrade offline. I ran the cd and it aborted half way through due to lack of space for the install. I binned a load of 'stuff' and put hte alternate installl CD in the drive. I then got the correct message on screen about teh upgrade material having been found. It then asked me if I wished to upgrade from the on line version. I said yes, and let it do its thing. Several error maeeages appeared during the install and I clicked them away. (can't remember what they were, there were several one of which was that canonical did not support some tings anymore) with about 2 to 3 hours later and with 5 minutes to go I got some error message about the upgrade being aborted because it couldn't find something. (don't know what). It then fiddled around for a little while, got rid of the upgrade screen and came back to the original desktop. I left it a while and then closed down. It closed down with the xubuntu rat thing in the middle of the screen, and the blue xubuntu colours. When I started it again I now get the xubuntu splash screen on starting and what appears to be the xubuntu logon screen. This is not what was there before. I chose the gnome session and get what appears to be ordinary Ubuntu, and when I ask it what it is system>about ubuntu it tells me that it is Ubuntu 9.10.
How can I tell what has happened and how do I get it back the way it was?
If this turns out not to be a bug, I am sorry but it was not what I was expecting and it just seems odd. When I try to upgrade now I get teh following error message, which means not much to me.

I think I have solved some of this and believe that it is several problems.

1. The gb.archive.ubuntu probably caused the update problems, for some reason I cannot connect to it. When I asked synaptic to pick the best server it picked another one which worked and now I can now update. Traffic or otherwise I do not know the reason for the unable to connect to the gb.archive thing ....traffic?

2. As for the xubuntu stuff, I have no real idea. Could it be connected?

Sorry for the long delay. Yes, it is quite likely that this is a problem with an overloaded server. I will be marking this as a duplicate of bug 464087.

Thank you, all is fixed now except I have a xubuntu startup screen(????). SOrry alsao that it has taken a long time to say 'thanks' but I just installed 9.10 on my netbook and it wiped out the solid state drive!! Fortunately a DD command fixed that. There seem to have been a lot of problems with 9.10, perhaps you were busy ;-). Even now I cannot connect to the UK server and have to change to main server in software sources. Not good!

knobcottage, I have just noticed something. Can you confirm if you are using IPv6? Maybe not all of the mirrors are properly configured?
