Bug Description
Binary package hint: update-manager
Step 1: Start update-manager from start menu.
Step 2: hit the "upgrade to 9.10"-button, follow the dialog and enter password
Step 3: wait while the upgrade runs
Step 3.1. Downloading works
Step 3.2. installing works until package "perl"
Then the whole OS freeze completely (which means, no keyboard or mouse input seems to do anything. i have tried strg-alt-f1, strg-alt-backspace, strg-alt-entf)
step 4: restart laptop by pressing power-button some time
step 5: bootscreen has some errors, then turns into console and says
/. waiting for /dev/disk/by-uuid/ some hexadecimal number with hyphens
/tmp: waiting for (null)
/home: waiting for UUID=some other number
swap: waiting for UUID=some third number
nothing further happens, (especially no booting)
reboots into other grub-entries do the same
during bootscreens with errors, esc allows to get into a "maintenance shell" console (same for recovery-mode when the above information is shown)
release: ubuntu 9.04 32-bit(grub still says that)
system: laptop with intel core2duo something, intel graphics
if you tell me how to get further information and logdata from this console, i will provide them.
Thanks for your bugreport and sorry for the trouble with the upgrade.
From the maintainance shell you can check if you can run "dpkg --configure -a" and then "apt-get install -f" to get get a working system back. You may have to run "mount -o remount,rw /". This will only work if it manages to mount "/". If not, then you will have to mount it manually via "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt ; chroot /mnt"
If you manage to get to the system (alternatively you can use the live cd for this). Please attach the logs in /var/log/ dist-upgrade/ *
