Bug Description

I have Breezy installed, and followed the instructions on http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/dapperbeta to upgrade it to the Dapper Beta. update-manager found the dapper release as expected, but failed during the upgrade.

In the third step, "Downloading and installing the upgrades" (translated from Spanish, may not be accurate), an error dialog appeared which the read: "Can't install 'ubuntu-desktop'. It was impossible to install a required packages. Please report this as a bug".

After closing this dialog another one appeared, but this one without title, content or close button. The main "Upgrading Ubuntu" dialog is still in the third step, blocked, and the progress bar says "Asking for confirmation".

Steps required to reproduce the problem:

1) Execute: gksudo "update-manager - d"
2) Press "Check" button
3) Press the "Upgrade" button that just appeared
4) Press the "Upgrade" button of the new dialog

I noticed that I didn't have the ubuntu-desktop package (though I had all its dependencies and I believe I didn't uninstalled it). I installed that package and then run again the update-manager.

This time I got another error: "Could not calculate the upgrade. A unresolvable problem occured while calculating the upgrade. Please report this as a bug.". The application exited cleanly after than, reverting the changes made to sources.list.

I will try a manual dist-upgrade, to test if this is really a problem with apt-get.

The manual dist-upgrade (that is, change breezy for dapper in sources.list, then apt-get dist-upgrade) worked. It did a couple of things wrong though, like removing OpenOffice.

openoffice.org2 was renamed back to openoffice.org again, so it had to
remove openoffice.org2 :)

Could you please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade*.log to this bugreport?

Thanks,
 Michael

After performing an upgrade from Breezy to Dapper Beta (4-21-2006), the /var/log/dist-upgrade.log file is empty.

Woops, made a mistake in the previous comment. It should be "dist-upgrade-term.log" instead of "dist-upgrade.log":

bug 48776, bug 40552 and bug 47095 are all related, the effect is the same and possibly the root cause as well.

Confirming and marking others as dupes. Will change the title to reflect that this also happens on the dapper -> edgy upgrade (see bug 48776)

Please be very careful when marking duplicates. Although the error message is the same, the root of the problem can differ: there are several breakages that can break the distribution upgrade.

Cheers,

Sebastian

I had this same problem in Gutsy.
Here's my solution:

1. Open Synaptic

2. Highlight ubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-minimal

3. In the menu, select Package>Lock version

4. Click Mark all Upgrades and Apply (let the upgrade complete)

5. Highlight ubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-minimal once more

6. Unselect Lock version.

(to make sure everything's in working order after this, you can run "sudo apt-get check")

Thanks for your bugreport.

Breezy is no longer supported so I'm afraid I have to close this bugreport.
