Bug Description

Hi
I tried the gconf editor hack to get old notification icon back but it doesnt work as intended. I can only see an icon when i manually open update manager.

The icon doesnt appear automatically when updates are available, but only when i manually check for updates.

Iam attaching my gconf settings for you to see yourself. Please tell me if any settings are wrong.

Whole week i sat thinking there are no updates ,but what do you know,it seems there are and also have to say,i havent got a notify osd message either.

Last i remember was getting a ! notification saying package sources must be old and please update.

I have to say, this is totally false information given by the devs that old behaviour can be restored with the gconf hack.

In previous versions, every single time on starting the system, the package manager used to start on its own - visible in the notification area with a grey star and on passing the mouse over it, it would say a package manager is working. If updates were available, the icon would glow and if not , it would go away on its own.

Now it does not happen. You have altered the time at which update manager checks automatically for updates .

All messed up now.

Make old behaviour fully functional and let it check for updates on starting the pc ,unless it has already done so in the last 24 hours.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates.

It would help us a lot if you could test a current, supported, Ubuntu version. If you test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could update this bug.
