Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

While performing a Intrepid to Jaunty upgrade, the upgrade-manager just told me :

'Not enough free disk space'

Well : I KNOW - my root partition is filled up ! for previous upgrades, in the past years, I transformed /var/lib/dpkg and /var/lib/apt into symbolic links onto another partition on which I have enough space : I know that Ubuntu aims to non-IT specialists, but well, couldn't you be IT specialist-compliant as well ? Now I have to actually FREE some space, which is useless work and loss of time ! don't become some Microsoft clone please !

Thanks for your bugreport.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add the log files from '/var/log/dist-upgrade/' to this bugreport as attachments to your bug report? Thanks in advance.

Its quite possible that u-m is right here, in addition to /var/lib/dpkg and /var/lib/apt it requires space in /var/cache/apt/archives to download the deb content. But the logs will have enough information to judge if its a bug in u-m or a legimatiate space problem.

Changed in update-manager (Ubuntu):
assignee: nobody → Michael Vogt (mvo)
status: New → Incomplete

Hello,

First of all, I deeply apologize for being so late in my answer. Good and not-so-good reasons contributed. As you did not close this issue, I will answer anyway.

Of course, I am almost sure you are right - I did not notice this directory /var/cache/apt/archives. I did not learn humility enough before shouting - me stupid. Thank you for your patience.

I did not analyze the attached dist-upgrade directory, but I am pretty sure it will confirm your assumption.

Best regards

(continued)

it looks like I am pretty tired these days (hence my very late answer)

it looks like : I created a link for /var/cache/apt a while ago, and I forgot I did : I just understood know :

root@rubedo:/var/log# ll /var/cache/
total 151,552
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4,096 2009-05-02 02:26 PackageKit
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4,096 2007-05-13 22:15 analog
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4,096 2007-04-18 05:28 app-install
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 2007-11-17 11:57 apt -> /home/var_cache_apt/
drwxr-xr-x 4 beagleindex nogroup 4,096 2007-06-30 07:39 beagle
drwxrwxr-x 2 root bind 4,096 2007-02-20 14:40 bind
(...)

I promise I am not cheating : the date is correct ! I understood when I wanted to create the directory /home/var_cache_apt : it already existed !
