Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I'm on Intrepid and are trying to upgrade to Jaunty but nothing I try works neither on my laptop nor on my desktop. It seems as if there is no jaunty release.
When I type:
do-release-upgrade -d
It says: No new release found.
With:
update-manager -d
There is no notification about a new release.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

$ sudo dpkg -l |grep update-manager
ii update-manager 1:0.93.35 GNOME application that manages apt updates
ii update-manager-core 1:0.93.35 manage release upgrades

Hi,

I disabled the upgrades from intrepid to jaunty via the release
upgrader temporarlly. The rational is bug #354228 that hits everybody
doing a release upgrade.

The problem is that when python2.6-minimal gets install the rtinstall
scripts get run. Those scripts are designed to byte-compile files for
the new python runtime just installed (used by python-support and
python-central, among others). There was a bug that prevents those
scripts from being run (and some python modules were not available for
python2.6 because of this bug).

This bug got fixed yesterday. But the fix trigger the bug mentioned
above in python-central (#354228) and it affects every upgrade from
intrepid to jaunty. The fix is being worked on and the upgrade should
be available again by the end of the day.

Cheers,
 Michael

another funny message from update-manager (1:0.93.34) on another intrepid installation:

$ update-manager -d
current dist not found in meta-release file

in ~/.update-manager-core and ~/.update-manager I found meta-release and meta-release-development files more than a year old.

"unfortunately" the problem went away when I did
      export http_proxy=http://localhost:3128
and rerun update-manager -d

But the proxy is not REQUIRED for internet access on this machine!

Maybe this gives you some hints where you can look for problems.
