Thanks for your bugreport.

This error indicates that something went wrong with the network update, Are you behind a proxy server?
Does the problem persists or does it go away when you run "sudo apt-get update" in a terminal window?

Thanks for you quick response.  Yes I am using the network from behind a government proxy server in Saudi Arabia. I ran "sudo apt-get update" as you suggested, but the problem did not go away and I got the following message from that command:

(
W: A error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used.GPG error: http://sa.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid-updates Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5 Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key <email address hidden>

W: Failed to fetch http://sa.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/intrepid-updates/Release

W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
)

I ran update-manager too and got the same message stated in the bug-report after pressing the 'Check' button.

Many thanks.
