Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I wanted to upgrade intrepid(64bit) to jaunty. It told me, it couldn´t:

2009-02-18 23:09:04,091 DEBUG Marking 'ubuntu-desktop' for upgrade
2009-02-18 23:09:05,688 DEBUG Can't mark 'ubuntu-desktop' for upgrade (E:Kann Probleme nicht korrigieren, Sie haben gehaltene defekte Pakete.)
2009-02-18 23:10:11,971 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'Can not mark 'ubuntu-desktop' for upgrade'

This "(E:Kann Probleme nicht korrigieren, Sie haben gehaltene defekte Pakete.)" means:
cannot solve problems. you are holding defect packages...

hi

I have the same problem
since apt cannot mark ubuntu-desktop for upgrade, I decided to remove it! :)

$ sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop
$ sudo apt-get autoremove

and then try to upgrade to jaunty.

$ update-manager -d

an error related to ubuntu-desktop happen... but, the upgrade still working and now, my intrepid is upgrading to jaunty!

I dont know if is the best 'workaround', but worked for me.

sorry for my poor english

thanks!

I am having this problem too. I uninstalled the ubuntu-desktop package, the jaunty upgrade button appeared. I reinstalled ubuntu-desktop, and the error occurs again. There are consipicuous errors in the log file toward the end (attached).

@badawiuol and magaio:
Please attach the full logs (including main.log) from /var/log/dist-upgrade. Please also run:
$ lsb_release -a
and add the information here as well.

Note that leaving out "sudo" causes this... a brief dialog pops up (too fast to read.)

$ update-manager -d
authenticate 'jaunty.tar.gz' against 'jaunty.tar.gz.gpg'
Segmentation fault

Then running correctly (sudo update-manager -d) works fine.

For the record, I was able to upgrade successfully after removing the ubuntu-desktop package, like the previous posters.

Me too, though I got an error about not being able to install ubuntu-desktop which I assumed would stop the upgrade, but it didn't

Hi to all. I'm trying tu update Linux quick 2.6.35-30-generic #61-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 11 17:52:57 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux to 11.04 but I gat this:

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be
caused by held packages.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the
'update-manager' package and include the files in
/var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.
