red circle with white bar appears in upper panel with error message, no joy with apt-get update; update manager, synaptic

This sounds like your /var/lib/dpkg/status file got corrupted, could you please attach it to this report?

Hi Michael

Thanks for your interest, unfortunately have reinstalled Ibex which trashed the file you need. Using the same /home directories and updates are working fine again. Unfortunately there are no - [] X boxes on the top right of windows anymore, but that's another story.
