update.manager unresponsive after installing updates

update-manager: 1:0.93.34

update-manger notifies me of new packages. i click the icon, update-manager appears and shows updates that can be installed.
i click install, update-manger calculates everything, starts downloading and installs the packages.
after that, while calculating system status, update-manger is grayed out for sereal minutes, i cannot interact anymore.
top shows that update-manger does little to nothing while hanging.
eventually update-manger is back, the close button is active again and i can close the application.

this behavior started after i upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10

updates with aptitude or apt do not show such behavior.

please let me know how i can improve my bug report!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Hey Ulrich. What kind of machine are you using? What cpu, how much memory (RAM) ? This behavior has been observed on system with low RAM, I wonder if your machine fits into the pattern

sorry for the late reply....
unfortunately i can't confirm this bug anymore, cause i dumped my old hardware and now own a shiny new system with 4GB ram ;)
the old system that this bug occured on/in was indeed a little weak:
1GB RAM , AthlonXP 2600+, i386 kernel.
