Upgrade from Hardy to Intrepid failed with above message

Could you please attach the logs in /var/log/dist-upgrade/* ? After you have done that, please remove the source archive.canonical.com that has the "commercial" component and try the upgrade again and see if that helps.

Removing the canonical.com archive solved the problem. I'm afraid
that these files probably result from my (mostly) successful second
attempt to upgrade after removing canonical.

I had a similar problem which was remedied by removing "http://archive.ubuntu.com intrepid main universe" from my sources list. Is anyone aware of whether this will have any adverse affects to future updates and/or functionality of my operating system?
