Binary package hint: update-manager

Running:
lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release: 8.04

trying to upgrade to 8.10

the upgrade was in the 'Setting new software channels' phase and gave the error:
Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by: "Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade in the bugreport.

the last interesting parts of /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log are:

From the main.log
2008-11-10 20:25:40,920 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'A essential package would have to be removed'

The apt-term.log is 2 months older than the upgrade. It shows an error with the "locales" package and doesn't match with the error you're experiencing.
